Matthew Mole wins a place on stage at the 100 Club

Matthew Mole has beaten 140 other South African artists to win Get Out of the Garage, and his place on stage at London’s legendary 100 Club. But before he jets off to England later this year, we had a few questions for the man who warmed the hearts of South Africa’s music fans…
What made you decide to stick it out as a one man army?
Music is my second language. It takes up a lot of my time, it drives me, it makes me who I am. Simplicity is what I’m all about, a lot of the time. I see a future in one man projects. Theres nothing like being energized by the electricity of other band members, but for this project, I’m heading in a slightly different direction. I’m digging performing multiple instruments at a time with the backing of some synth.
What’s your music all about?
I try to live my life a little differently to the way most other people think it should be done. I try to bring that across in my music. I aim for people to be effected even if they don’t realise it at the time.
Your favourite moment as a music maker?
I’m not a very well established musician yet. But I have some friends in Durban, they have been promoters of destiny. So the last time I played a show in there, they brought a bunch of people – I found that people were singing along to my songs. It felt pretty great.
What inspires you to keep doing what you’re doing?
Obviously the more you put in, the more you get out. I’ve been feeling that big time over the past few weeks. I’ve been blown away constantly, which motivates me to punt hard.
When and how did you know you were ready to “Get Out Of The Garage”?
This year, I’ve had the privilege of playing events alongside many of my favorite South African bands. I’ve learnt so many things from every experience. I feel well prepared for a trip to London.
After you’ve rocked the 100 Club, what would your next steps be?
I’d dig to do a national tour. There are so many ridiculously talented bands in South Africa and I’d really like to form relationships with them. Developing a solid name in South Africa would be ideal before planning any other serious international trips.
